Number of ANA Passengers on Japan Routes Falls for 3rd Year

Tokyo, April 15 (Jiji Press)--Japan's All Nippon Airways said Thursday the number of passengers on its domestic flights fell for the third straight year in fiscal 2009 ended March 31.

The number fell 8.6 pct from the previous year to 37,954,844 due to the economic slowdown and the spread of H1N1 influenza.

But demand for some key domestic flights, especially routes between Tokyo and cities such as Sapporo and Fukuoka, has been strong since the start of this calendar year, company officials said.

The number of passengers on ANA's international flights increased 3.4 pct in fiscal 2009 to 4,128,147, up for the first time in two years.

While business demand was sluggish, demand for flights to tourist destinations, including China and other Asian countries, was strong.

Business demand is expected to grow, ANA President Shinichiro Ito said at a news conference.

In fiscal 2009, the volume of domestic freight fell 1.5 pct to about 457,000 tons, while the volume of international cargo grew 18.3 pct to about 386,000 tons on strong demand for electronics and auto parts.END
