Remy Power Products Product Safety Alert

EDMOND, Okla., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Remy Power Products, LLC ("Remy") has recently learned of a potential component deficiency in certain aftermarket alternators sold through retail auto parts and/or service locations between December 28, 2009 and April 9, 2010 with the following part numbers: 12359, 21749, 21816, 21845, 8400076, 91606, 91608, 91611, 21828, 91609, 22016, 91616, 22022. We have recently received reports from the field that after installation into certain new vehicles, these alternators may continue to experience electrical surges even when the vehicles are turned off. This may potentially result in thermal events and present a risk of fire and other damage. Please note this potential hazard can only occur with alternators installed into vehicles. This Alert does not apply to product not yet installed or removed from vehicles. No injuries have been reported to date in connection with this Alert.

Your safety is our first priority. For that reason, REMY has initiated a safety recall of the potentially affected alternators. All Remy aftermarket alternators with the model numbers listed above that were purchased and/or installed between December 28, 2009 and April 9, 2010 should be considered to be potentially affected by this Alert.

If you purchased or had installed into your vehicle a REMY alternator with one of the part numbers listed above between December 28, 2009 and April 9, 2010 it is very important that you take your vehicle to your preferred local automotive service repair shop for an inspection of your alternator. You should have this alternator inspection performed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, PREFERABLY WITHIN 24 HOURS OF YOUR RECEIPT OF THIS NOTICE. You or the mechanic at the service shop should contact Remy's customer service immediately at 1-866-372-2088 to receive instructions on how to identify the affected alternator and determine if it needs replacement. If your alternator needs replacement, Remy customer service will make arrangements for the replacement of your alternator without any cost to you or the service shop. If you are not able to take your vehicle to a service shop, or if you prefer to perform the inspection and possible replacement yourself, please contact Remy's customer service immediately at 1-866-372-2088 to receive instructions on how to identify the affected alternator and determine if it needs replacement. If your alternator needs replacement, Remy customer service will immediately make arrangements for the replacement of your alternator without any charge to you.

As additional information becomes available, Remy may make additional communications to customers, dealers and the public regarding this matter. Remy will also communicate additional information for the replacement of the potentially affected product population as approved by NHTSA.
